You’ve saved and you’ve saved. Now you’re ready to build your dream home or remodel your kitchen or renovate your bathroom. Whatever project you have in mind, you want it completed with quality craftsmanship by a professional builder who listens to your ideas and works to make your vision a reality.
- Check to make sure your builder is fully licensed. The state of Virginia can help with this. Virginia.gov has a section dedicated to “License Lookup and Disciplinary Actions” for professional services. This site will tell you whether your contractor is licensed, their license number, the expiration date of the license and whether or not the builder has any open complaints against their company.
- Ask to see a portfolio of past work. Any professional contractor or builder will have this immediately available to you, either on their website or in a book with photographs. Click here to see JMS Builders & Developers online residential and commercial construction portfolios.
- Ask for references. This is key. Ask for references and make sure you call them before signing any contracts. Don’t be afraid to ask the tough questions, either. You’ve worked hard to get to the point where you can afford your building/renovation/remodeling project and you deserve to be well informed.
Remember: A few minutes of research on the front end can help save hours of headaches down the road.
